Nassau placing more children in foster care
State data show that the number of children placed in foster care rose 47 percent over the past nine years, from 236 in 1998 to 346 in 2007. The number rose 22 percent last year alone. Foster care placements are also up nationwide, but Nassau's increase is much sharper, and it takes place amid a growing consensus that keeping families together is far preferable to placing children in foster care.
