Basu: Abused in state care, still looking for answers
She was a lost, out-of-control 16-year-old who had taken to cutting herself when her desperate parents turned for help to the Iowa Department of Human Services. The state declared her a Child in Need of Assistance and placed her in the Marshalltown Boys and Girls Home, a state-funded day program for troubled children.
But instead of getting help, she got molested by her counselor. He carried a gun, she said, and once placed it to her head and threatened to kill her, her mother, her boyfriend or himself if she told.
