Last night, on the day before announcing his candidacy for President of the United States, Governor Chris Christie shamefully vetoed important bipartisan legislation passed by the New Jersey Legislature – the New Jersey Gestational Carrier Agreement Act – that would have modernized New Jersey law by giving legal parental rights of a child carried by a gestational surrogate to the intended parent at birth.  Garden State Equality, New Jersey’s statewide advocacy and education organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization, decried Governor Christie’s veto of this important legislation impacting LGBT people and their families.

Yes, there is an alternative to the dysfunctional foster care system

Yes, there is an alternative to the dysfunctional foster care system

I admit to total ignorance on this issue, though it usually forms the basis of any crime drama story regarding missing or abused children in the media. It’s foster care, and how it’s failing our nation’s children. The basis for foster care is to make sure the well being of the child is properly maintained. It’s a good principle, but one that is lacking in today’s government-based system, which is fraught with failure.

The Closure of the College of Social Work

The Closure of the College of Social Work

It has been announced that the College of Social Work (TCSW) will close. TCSW has been in operation for less than four years. TCSW was established following the recommendations of the Social Work Task Force. The Task Force was part of the government response to the high profile death of Peter Connelly -- "Baby P" in 2008. The College is being closed for financial reasons. Community Care magazine reports that TCSW faced an annual deficit of £240,000. A government decision was taken to stop providing financial support. TCSW has always struggled to attract sufficient income. This was partly due to the failure to attract enough members. The final blow for TCSW was the failure to win a contract -- potentially worth £2 million -- to deliver the new accreditation and assessment scheme for the advanced child and family practitioner award. This is one of the initiatives to raise the standards of practice in work with children and families. The contract has been awarded to a joint bid from the management consultants KPMG and Morning Lane Associates. Morning Lane Associates is a company that was set up by the Chief Social Worker for Children and Families, Isabelle Trowler.

Grandparent Custody Rights in Pennsylvania

Grandparent Custody Rights in Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, grandparents and great-grandparents have physical custody rights surrounding their grandchildren.  In rare circumstances, grandparents can request and win primary physical custody of their grandchildren.  This is not common, but if the grandparent can overcome any objections toward “standing,” which in a custody setting permits the grandparent to act as a party in the custody action and file a viable custody complaint against the parent/s, it may be granted.  In order to request primary physical custody, a grandparent must demonstrate (1) that the grandparent/grandchild relationship began with the consent of a parent or as a result of a court order, (2) that the grandparent is willing to assume responsibility for the grandchild; and (3) the grandchild has been declared dependent by the court, or, the grandchild is substantially at risk due to parental abuse, neglect, drug or alcohol abuse or incapacity, or, the grandchild has resided with the grandparent for a period of at least 12 consecutive months before the grandchild was removed from the grandparent’s care by the parent.

When I was about 12 years old, I was removed from my family and placed into the Tennessee child welfare system as a foster child. I had to pack all my belongings into trash bags and leave the home I knew behind. Roughly five years later, one week before my 18th birthday, I was adopted by my forever family.

When I Was a Kid, We Were All 'Free Range'

I'm so relieved.  Maryland has clarified its policy on "free range" children.  Lawmakers there have decided that the state shouldn't investigate the parents of these children unless the children are harmed or face substantial risk of harm.  This policy clarification arose from a case where two "free range" children were twice picked up by the police and taken home.  Child Protective Services got involved, and the whole episode then went out of control.  These poor children, who were doing nothing other than being children, were held by CPS without being able to even see their parents for a period of time.

On Friday the Finney County attorney, Susan Richmeier, announced that she is charging Banda, whose home was searched after her son dared to question anti-pot propaganda passed off as "drug education" at his school, with five crimes: child endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia (two counts), manufacture of a controlled substance (the cannabis oil she used to treat her Crohn's disease), and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of school property. All five charges are related to Banda's medical use of marijuana, which is allowed in 23 states but not Kansas.

Parents Charged with Felony Neglect for Leaving Son in Backyard for 90 Minutes

Parents Charged with Felony Neglect for Leaving Son in Backyard for 90 Minutes

Two Florida parents are being charged with third degree felonies for "neglecting" their 11-year-old son, according to Reason.
This is one of those stories that just gets my blood boiling.
The neglect? Leaving their son playing in the backyard for 90 minutes without adult supervision and a key to get inside.
His parents couldn't get home in time to let him into the house due to rain and traffic, so he played basketball in the backyard until they got home.
Shit happens unfortunately.  What are you gonna do?
A neighbor called the police to report the parents. Not long after the parents returned home were they arrested by police for negligence. They would not see their children again for over a month.
I'm sorry but that neighbor should be beaten severely and left to bleed in the street!  She certainly could have been a better neighbor.  She could have perhaps talked to the kid, gotten the parents cell phone number, called to see what was up and done the neighborly thing and helped.  She could have minded her own freekin business.  But no!  She calls the police to report the parents who were stuck in one of those shit happens situations and probably doing their best to get home as quickly as possible.

What an asshole.  Really.
Because the state chose to pursue charges of felony neglect against the parents, both their 11-year-old and 4-year-old sons were taken away from them by Child Protective Services and placed into a foster care home.
In foster care, says the mother, the eldest son ate nothing but cereal for days at a time. According to the report, the sons were then taken in by a "problematic" relative, who just a couple weeks in, gave the sons back to the state.
Like the kid was really any better off in the care of DCF.

I'm disgusted with the human race because of people like this.

JESSICA’S STORY: A MOTHER’S FIGHT FOR HER DISABLED DAUGHTER AGAINST DCF.

Ever since DailyHaze did a story on Amber Thurmond, we have had a large and disturbing response from families in similar situations involving Kansas DCF. What is even more disturbing is the amount of people that are terrified to come forward with their story. This is for many reasons, either they are scarred they will take their children again, keep the children they already have in their system and, or, take their other children. Regardless of the reason, one thing is clear, many of these families are being bullied by the DCF to keep their mouth shut. People fear the Department for Children and Families as if they are some kind of cartel.
