Juvenile Justice System Breeds Adult Criminals
When boys are placed in juvenile delinquency centers, they are more likely to be incarcerated as adults compared to similarly troubled kids who avoid a brush with the system early in life, a new study suggests.
Based on the results of this study, there is strong evidence to keep kids out of juvenile detention and jail. Being locked up for weeks, months or even years with other juvenile delinquents is going to make the odds for successful rehabilitation pretty slim. Even worse is the fact that many youth are thrown into the adult justice system when they are charged as adults. This means they could be facing lengthy mandatory prison sentences where the focus certainly is not on rehabilitation like it is or should be in the juvenile justice system.
