DFCS must exercise transparency in cases of severe child abuse
As a former advocate for the state’s abused and neglected children, I have been witness to many sad and tragic cases over the years, some even deadly. This time, however, a case has touched my family directly. We know Adrianna Swain. More importantly, my 4-year-old twins were playmates of Adrianna’s. Beaten to within inches of her life, 2-year-old Adrianna will never be the same child again. In September, she suffered unspeakable violence resulting in massive brain injuries and extensive damage to her vital organs. The agency responsible for protecting Adrianna and that recommended she be returned to her parents should open its files — today — and be held accountable to explain why it did so.
