Last week, news reached me that there was yet another distraught mother who had fled to Ireland to prevent her three children being seized for no good reason by British social workers.Although the family have been living there for four years, with the children all doing well at school, the mother had just been arrested for failing to have a valid tax disc by the Irish police, who confiscated her car and held her in a police cell for nine hours.

Disobey the law and we have the finest system going. Our system compared to many is far and away the best. However it has, as I have come to learn, certain flaws that have evolved and have tilted the scales of justice.

Since I've been doing this, I have come across several blogs of people who have made the decision and take the steps to become foster parents. Although many of them just fizzle out after a short time, a few go on and take you through the whole process. From making the decision to regurgitating that which they learned about in foster parent training. From getting their first stolen child to where they get all fed up and disgusted with the system and the process or totally upset with me and stop blogging altogether. These I commonly refer to the "Foster Parent Journey" blogs. Why? Because becoming a foster parent is apparently some adventurous spiritual journey of self-becoming or something.
I really enjoy reading some of these blogs. I often long for the "ignorance is bliss days" when I believed that this was all for the greater good instead of lining the pockets of the System Sucks. Ah but learning the truth has it's drawbacks.
Still, I have yet to figure out what would possess somebody to make such a decision, but they do. Perhaps because they're good people who were simply sold on a line of bullshit, moved by the fluff, and motivated by the constant horror stories of child abuse that the media likes to spurt out on occasion, which only covers the extremest mode.
But anyway. I introduce you to Jennifer and Michael, who seem like good god fearing people who want to do the right thing by selling their souls to the devil, I mean joining the Child Protective Industry and becoming foster parents.
I hope and pray that someday you might come to see the truth. I hope that you learn empathy for the real parents instead of the hatred and criticism that fuels most of these blogs. And I pray that you always do what's right by the kids who come into your care.

The situation was misinterpreted and made out to be something that it wasn't by the social worker. Well the social worker called me and accused me of breaking a serious rule. I told her respectfully that I disagreed and that she wasn't listening to me. She didn't believe me that I was telling the truth and I got upset that she wasn't listening. After an hour long phone call I thought we finally had everything figured out.

On May 9, 2012, Rheana Murray, with the New York Daily News published an article on a controversial non-profit called Project Prevention (formerly known as CRACK: Children Requiring A Caring Kommunity). Project Prevention, based out of North Carolina, pays women $300 to either get tubal ligations (permanent sterilization), or other forms of long-term birth control such as IUDs, Implanon, or Depro-Provera shots. The article does well discussing both supportive and oppositional opinions revolved around the program's practices. Founder Barbara Harris holds firm to the position that Project Prevention is about preventing unwanted pregnancies and placing fewer burdens on the child welfare system. Harris has adopted four siblings, all from the same mother who was addicted to crack. The program believes that decreasing unwanted pregnancies from addict populations will aid with the economic burden on taxpayers, trim down social worker caseloads, and alleviate clients from "the burden of having children that will potentially be taken away" (projectprevention.org) The article also provides opposing viewpoints of Project Prevention, including beliefs that the program is "thinly disguised" racism, targeting vulnerable populations and women of color. Critics condemn the program further by discussing that addicts may not be in a position to make decisions of this magnitude, especially when offered money. Harris responds to criticism within the article stating that two thirds of the women Project Prevention has served are White, and that the majority of women choose long term birth control over sterilization.

Recently I met two prisoners, Nick and Lee. Both are in their thirties and both are in prison because they were involved in armed robberies. In Nick’s case someone died in the course of the robbery and he is serving a 25 year sentence. Lee’s sentence is 15 months and he will be out soon. Both men have been in and out of prison for the last 20 years. As of last Friday, there were 84,500 prisoners in the UK, over 80,000 of them men. The reason I visited Nick and Lee is because they were in care as children and wanted to talk to me about what happened to them in care and how it led to them ending up in prison. The sad reality is that many thousands of prisoners who were in care as children have stories like Nick and Lee. Nick and Lee told me they want to stop other children who are in care now ending up in prison like them and following a life of crime.

When Velvet’s daughter Samantha was born with severe disabilities, she was taken away by the provincial government and put into foster care. But it was that moment that Velvet began her fight for the rights of disabled children and their parents.
In 2007, the provincial government passed “Samantha’s Law,” which gave parents of a disabled child the right to raise that child themselves and have access to the government services they need. This law has gained the attention of other provinces and countries, who wish to model their own laws after it.
Sadly, Samantha died in 2006 at the age of 13 after suffering cardiac arrest. But Velvet’s fight will continue.
