It is now common knowledge that Australian adult prisons are incarcerating children as young as 13. The major obstacle for human rights advocates struggling to free these children from our adult prisons is the Australian government and the horrific prejudices and stereotypes they have shoved down Australians’ throats.

On 17 January, an unaccompanied child with a broken pelvis lies on a hospital bed in a room full of other patients who were wounded during the earthquake, in a field hospital set up near the main airport in Port-au-Prince, the capital. Beside her, UNICEF Child Protection Specialist Nadine Perrault confers with hospital staff, most of who have been provided by the American University of Miami. Ms. Perrault wears a T-shirt and cap that bear the UNICEF logo.

November 20 marks the twentieth anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and people will celebrate this historic milestone for children's rights with events across Canada and around the world. But even as we recognize what has been accomplished for children over the past two decades, UNICEF's State of the World's Children report reminds us that much work remains to ensure that every child in every country has every chance to survive and thrive.
Note: And they fail and sweep it under the rug on a daily basis. Go figure.
