J.K. Rowling Must Register as a Potential Pedophile

In a stunningly misguided program implemented by the British government, all children's book authors who visit schools must register with a national database intended to protect children from pedophiles, and they must pay a fee to do so. Beginning October 12, 2009, the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) will require that all adults who work with children, including authors such as J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman if they make special visits to schools, will be required to register with the database for a fee of £64 ($105).

Feds order Virginia to cease threatening special needs foster families to give up support services

Feds order Virginia to cease threatening special needs foster families to give up support services

Virginia DSS ordered by feds to change law regarding definition of "special needs" foster children by placement, which is in violation of federal law and has been preventing Virginia special needs foster children from accessing adoption support services as mandated by federal law. To qualify as "special needs" and receive services and financial adoption assistance children were required to be in the legal custody of VADSS or another child placing agency. VADSS workers reportedly used this law to force families to take custody of special needs foster children and agree to give up all support services, otherwise the families were threatened with losing the children they loved. This has been one of many nasty undercurrents of VADSS. The localities are not held accountable by the state since each local DSS office only answers to it's own board. Same problem with schools. Local agencies are not state run.

Governor Chet Culver says it's "too early to know" whether the Department of Human Services did anything wrong in its review of a baby's welfare.

Last month, a Des Moines infant was treated for a broken arm and, while the D.H.S. launched an investigation, the child remained with his parents. The baby's father is Jonas Neiderbach, son of Jon Neiderbach -- a financial analyst for the Department of Human Services. The baby and his parents were living in Jon Neiderbach's home. The baby is now in critical condition in a Des Moines hospital, being treated for head trauma and broken ribs -- injuries the boy suffered last week.
