Suppose one day you arrived home and learned that you no longer had authority over your minor teenage son. Unbeknownst to you, your son received advice from a legal aid group on how to become emancipated. No court hearings, no opportunity to be part of the legal process, and now no access to school records or medical records…no rights any longer as a parent. Then you find out that your son was receiving without your permission or even your knowledge hormone treatments in order to transition from male to female. Would you be shocked? Would you wonder how such legal action could take place and you not even know about it?

Emancipation of Minors
Most people think of emancipation as the legal process someone under 18 years of age (a minor) goes through to get the legal status of an adult. A minor child may be emancipated for a specific purpose. It is important to remember that a minor child is never completely emancipated. An emancipated minor will always face some limits. For example, a 16 year old may be emancipated for the specific purpose of giving medical consent but is not permitted to vote or purchase alcohol.

Facing the Mortgage Crisis: Aging Out of Foster Care and Into Affordable Housing
The Vista Maria campus for girls has gorgeous brick buildings spread out over 37 acres. You could easily mistake it for a boarding school out east. There's the big lawn out front. Volleyball courts behind each hall. Inside, you'll find some girls watching a movie, others are working out, and some are getting ready for the big Fall dance.
But that's where the similarities end.
Note from Beverly Tran: What should be raised as a concern is why Michigan Supreme Court Justices Maura Corrigan and Robert Young, both who have strong affiliations in the direction of Vista Maria and child welfare, have neglected to take a public position on the severe challenges youth, who age-out the system, are faced with.
But then again, I believe it would be a conflict of interest to advocate for those you adjudicate.

Top state and national child welfare experts launched a campaign today seeking foster and adoptive parents, mentors and other volunteers to help New Jersey's 8,600 foster children lead a more stable life.
The "Raise Me Up'' campaign will use TV, radio and billboards on buses and trains to educate the public how foster children are more likely to become homeless, suffer from a mental illness or commit crimes if they lack a permanent home, family support, and a path to pursue higher education and job training, the coalition said.

Each year, more than 20,000 youth across the nation “emancipate” from foster care systems at around 18 years of age. Already having faced the trauma of removal from their birth families and possible multiple placements, these youth face numerous pitfalls as they transition to independent adulthood. Compared with their peers, they run a higher risk of becoming homeless, dropping out of school or college, becoming unemployed and relying on public benefits and becoming involved in crime as they seek to make it on their own.

Like other foster youths across the state, Kinyon faces graduation with eager excitement and a sense of anxiety because she knows she will be on her own. About 5,000 of the 80,000 children in foster care leave the child welfare system each year in California.
Of those, 65 percent need housing immediately, 51 percent are unemployed within two to four years and 40 percent are homeless within 18 months, said James Wogan, who coordinates services for up to 500 foster students annually in the Mt. Diablo school district. Kinyon is one of 16 foster youths in the district graduating from high school this month.
