Scrutiny of dependency court system shunned
A director of the law firm fighting to keep representing impoverished clients in Santa Clara County's juvenile dependency court has objected to a proposal to monitor firms like his as they represent children and parents across the state.
John Nieman, a top attorney at Santa Clara Juvenile Defenders, is a rare voice complaining about monitoring, among those offering comments to a statewide commission creating sweeping dependency court reforms. The reforms include standards for attorney performance, considered a critical remedy for widespread problems in the courts that oversee foster care.
Note: The headline should have read, "Scrutiny of System Suck's Shunned!"
