Church accused over Criminal Records checks for choir members
Church accused over Criminal Records checks for choir members
The Church of England’s Guildford Diocese has been accused of being too politically correct after calling for all choir members across the diocese to complete a Criminal Records Bureau check.
One elderly choir member is refusing to return his form out of principle and might even leave the Church of England in protest. However, a spokesman for the diocese said that they are working to handle his case while remaining within guidelines.
Although the man in question, Mr Harding, 82, has no criminal convictions, his family says that he does not wish his details to be held by someone other than the police. Mr Harding has attended the choir at St Peter’s, Walton-on-the-Hill, for more than 40 years and was advised that all choir members had to complete a CRB check because children were also members of the choir.
----
Note: This is an excellent example of how the anti-abuse people in the UK have blown the whole issue of child abuse and neglect out of proportion. If not for their lack of insight into child abuse itself, the Baby P fuck-up never would have happened and an 82 year old man would not have to under-go a criminal background check just to be able to sing in his Church Choir.
Personally I thought we had it bad over here.
This is beyond political correctness gone wild! This is more like Big Brother or the New World Order conspiracy theories becoming real. Either that or there is a full bloom epidemic of Anal-Retentive Disorder in the UK.
(nothing personal, just stating an observation)

The Big Question: Have we taken child protection measures too far in Britain?
The Big Question: Have we taken child protection measures too far in Britain?
Surrey County Council has been criticised by Ofsted over its "unacceptable and dangerous" efforts to vet staff working with children, warning that youngsters are being put at risk as a result. The issue of checking teachers, youth workers and others responsible for youngsters' welfare has steadily risen up the agenda during the last decade, and the Government is preparing to launch an agency that could result in a quarter of the adult population being vetted for any criminal past.
But there are signs of a backlash against the increase in child protection measures, with claims that it is poisoning the relationships between the generations and deterring law-abiding members of the community from volunteering to work with children.

Child protection (GMTV)
Day 1 Part 1
Day 1 Part 2
Day 1 Part 3
Are we protecting our children too much? Read some of the messages you've sent in and have your say here TV Presenter Esther Rantzen says child protection has turned into a politically correct monster.
What do you think? Have your say below and read some of the messages that you've already sent in.
She says she initially started ChildLine in a bid to alert people that most child abuse happens at home, but this has subsequently resulted in "senseless overprotection" of children.
Esther says the fact that some schools hold uncompetitive sports days, and that teachers can't even touch pupils these days, are examples of this over protection.
