DCF hotline a defense against abuse, neglect
Debbie Bassett takes calls at the Connecticut Department of Children and Families Abuse and Neglect Hotline, in the DCF’s office in Hartford. Bassett receives reports of abuse and other problems involving children and the DCF decides whether to open an investigation.

Of the more than 95,000 calls received last year, only about a quarter turned into actual investigations. Daymonde said roughly half the calls received last year were from people seeking information. About 45,000 of the calls received last year were deemed worthy of some further inspection but, eventually, only about half of those were serious enough to warrant full investigations.
