A R.I. lawyer’s fees go on trial, and the lawyer wins
The $64,264-a-year social worker for the state Department of Children, Youth & Families, known during her second marriage as Liz Bence, was sued by her divorce lawyer for not paying her bill. And now she’s facing a judgment, entered last month by a Superior Court judge, for more than $35,000. The court ordered the single mother of two to pay $18,520 in attorney’s fees, interest of 18 percent per year (which as of today amounts to more than $10,000) and the $6,900 charged by the $300-an-hour lawyer that the divorce lawyer hired to bring the lawsuit and try the case. Interest continues to run as long as the bill remains unpaid.
