A back to school reminder - Teachers are the #1 CPS Rats

The start of a new school year typically conjures memories of yellow school buses in a row, students in a single-file line and fresh crayons, but for the Indiana Department of Child Services, its synonymous with something else – more reports of suspected abuse or neglect.

Data from DCS shows reports of suspected abuse dip in June and July and jump in August when students go back to the classroom. According to the data, in 2017 there were 22,181 reports made in May, 17,696 in June, 17,194 in July and 23,137 in August. Numbers available for 2018 follow a similar pattern: 22,792 reports were made in May. That number dropped to 16,398 in June. Data for July 2018 is not yet available.

Learning the right lessons from foster care tragedy

ONE NEED ONLY READ the Union Leader’s searing account of the horrible abuse of a young foster child — and the allegedly slipshod quick-and-dirty process by which the foster home was licensed — to understand why the New Hampshire Division of Children Youth and Families and the private agency involved in the case tried desperately to prevent the public from finding out about it.

Fortunately, the Union Leader fought for the public’s right to know and won. Now that the people of New Hampshire know, they can act. But how? The right kind of action requires reconsidering assumptions that have dominated the child welfare debate in New Hampshire for years. Those false assumptions helped get the state into this mess in the first place.

Weaponizing CPS: Shaun King says a troll called in a phony child services complaint on his family

"It's been a completely crazy 48 hours," Shaun King declared in a video posted on Twitter Friday morning. The galvanizing civil rights activist and Intercept columnist is no stranger to crazy timelines. Since his rise to prominence as an outspoken figure in the Black Lives Matter movement, he's been repeatedly subjected to conspiracy theories about his racial identity. He says he gets death threats so regularly that "When I leave my house my wife & kids regularly hug and kiss me like it could be the last time they see me." But this week has been different. On Wednesday, he took to social media to say, "Someone hateful has targeted my children tonight. The lowest moment of my life as a leader. Pray for us. We’re safe, but deeply humiliated."
