Action News Jax is investigating parental rights following a call from a local woman who has a dying daughter.

She claims the Florida Department of Children and Families may try to take her daughter away because she wants to discontinue chemotherapy and use natural remedies for the child.

Family says DHS 'stripped' mom, daughter of rights in battle against cancer

A group of family members and supporters gathered at Pioneer Courthouse Square Saturday calling for a Wilsonville girl and her mother to be reunited after the Department of Human Services (DHS) recently took the girl into protective custody.

Kylee Dixon and her mother, Christine, were reported missing earlier this week. Clackamas County Deputies say Christine ignored a court order to bring Kylee to DHS. Deputies told KATU News Kylee missed a surgery scheduled for June 6th.

New York mother fighting son's chemotherapy ordered to turn over custody to temporary custodian

The mother of the boy who has been fighting to have her son removed from court-ordered chemotherapy treatment will now have to turn her son over to a temporary custodian.

Candace Gundersen of Huntington, New York has been fighting to regain custody of her son Nicholas Gundersen, 13, from Suffolk County Child Protective Services.

Teen being forced to undergo chemo released to family friend

A Suffolk Family Court judge on Friday delivered a setback in the case of a 13-year-old who’s being forced to undergo chemotherapy, stripping his mother of custody and releasing him to a friend who must continue the therapy.

Nick Gundersen is in remission from mixed phenotype acute leukemia and has been undergoing court-mandated chemotherapy at NYU Winthrop Hospital since Oct. 30. He was released to a family friend in Huntington, where he will continue outpatient treatment.

Law aimed at protecting kids like Alfie Evans and Charlie Gard introduced in UK

A new measure introduced in the British Parliament Tuesday evening would give new options and protection to children in situations similar to Charlie Gard and Alfie Evans.

Charlie’s Law would require hospitals to attempt to resolve disputes with parents via mediation before going to the courts, mandate access to clinical ethics committees to advise both doctors and parents on life-or-death decisions, and allow parents to seek treatment elsewhere if unsatisfied with their current hospital.

Quebec foster parents of disabled children get far more benefits than birth families: study

Families that foster children with disabilities get paid 70 per cent more benefits by the government than a family that chooses to keep the kids in the home, according to a new study.

The survey by the Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton firm has gotten the attention of families of disabled kids, who are now demanding parity in benefits with foster families.

Child Protective Services called on parents treating kid with CBD oil for epilepsy

'Helpless': The only treatment for their baby's epileptic seizures was illegal

What would you do if your child had a serious illness and the only treatment that would stop her pain was illegal?

Two-year-old Jaelah Jerger has epilepsy, and as a baby her tiny body was wracked with up to 30 seizures a day. Her parents tried a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but it didn't work.

The Jergers decided to try a remedy they'd learned about on the internet, an extract from the cannabis plant called cannabidiol, or CBD. Advocates of the oil say it can help with schizophrenia, anxiety, cancer — and epilepsy.

UK Appeals Court Rules Against Parents of Toddler on Life Support

The Court of Appeal in the UK ruled against the parents of a 23-month-old boy on life support. They wanted to take him to Italy for medical treatment.

The toddler is battling an undiagnosed brain disease, according to reports. He is on life support at Liverpool's Alder Hey Children's Hospital which is part of the UK's National Health Service Foundation Trust.
