The Legacy of Racism in Child Welfare

On July 13, 1863—150 years ago tomorrow—the 233 children residing in the Colored Orphan Asylum were going about their normal routine.  At 4 p.m., according to one account of the day, most of the residents “were quietly seated in their school rooms,” the younger boys and girls were “playing in the nursery,” and a few who were ill “recline[ed] on a sick bed in the hospital.”  It took the staff and children by surprise, then, when the institution came under attack by “an infuriated mob, consisting of several thousand men, women, and children, armed with clubs, brickbats, etc.” - See more at: http://www.icphusa.org/index.asp?page=26&blog=64&focus=#sthash.JERDGEK5.dpuf
