10 Things You Should do if CPS or DCFS is Investigating You

No matter how absurd or unbelievable the CPS/DCFS social worker’s claim(s) may seem, please understand that the social worker is dead serious, and most likely presumes – no… most likely BELIEVES that you are guilty as accused. Even if the social worker doesn’t admit that s/he is at your home to take your children, often times that IS EXACTLY why they are there. It is our experience, over 20+ years, that the majority of CPS social workers develop a cynical view of life and assume that you are UTTERLY GUILTY until YOU PROVE that you are not: the opposite of the way the “justice system” is supposed to operate.

Actually, Social Media Is Ruining Parenting

A few weeks ago, a mom named Alex McDaniel, wrote a seemingly benign joke on Twitter: "3-year-old for sale. $12 or best offer." Soon after the tweet, Child Protective Services showed up at her doorsteps with concerns over human trafficking. McDaniel is known for documenting the cute things her son does and says, but apparently a stranger didn't find this particular comment all that cute. There's a multitude of reasons why social media is actually ruining parenting, and McDaniel's story is just one example. Parents are using social media in seemingly harmless ways without realizing that not everyone gets their jokes or cares about everything they have to say.

Conditions are dire within Kentucky's child welfare system. It was re-accredited anyway

Conditions are dire within Kentucky's child welfare agency, with caseloads soaring beyond acceptable national standards, according to a recent report by a legislative committee.

Turnover is high among social workers, and their numbers have been outpaced by the surging number of children removed from homes because of abuse or neglect, said the report by the state Legislative Research Commission. At least half the workers say their caseloads have become "unmanageable," and the agency doesn't have enough money to hire additional staff even as reports of child abuse and neglect have doubled in the past six years.

It was close to 1:30 a.m., and two children who’d been taken from their homes by Washington Child Protective Services were still waiting in a Pierce County child welfare office for someone — anyone — to agree to take them in for a night. A worker posted a desperate plea on a Facebook page for foster parents that morning last June: “Insomnia anyone? Still up? The boys in Tacoma still need placement.”

Workers’ earlier posts had offered an “exceptional cost placement” for the teens. That’s code for payments that can top $600 a night — more than the base rate foster parents get for a whole month of care — as an incentive for foster parents to take a child.

Dr. Lanre Falusi knows firsthand the anxiety families face when the future of their child’s health insurance is in jeopardy. A pediatrician at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Dr. Falusi recently had a routine visit from a seven-year-old patient with asthma. For the last few months this little girl has been fairly stable thanks to her daily controller and rescue medication covered through D.C.’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). But she often has tough winters and her mother was trying to plan ahead having heard CHIP’s future funding was uncertain. “That was her question: ‘If I don’t know if she’s going to have insurance, can I get a prescription for extra medication and save it just in case?’ . . . She was in crisis planning mode for her daughter’s health and she wanted to stockpile the medication. It was really disconcerting to me that that’s what we’re asking parents to start doing.
