Yesterday was a bad day for behaviors at the foster care medical clinic where I work. Among the usual sore throats and well child checkups I examined a cute seven-year-old whose aggressive behaviors were about to get him expelled from his second elementary school; a pleasant teen who felt her anxiety responded better to daily marijuana than to my prescriptions, and a drug-exposed, hyperactive 3-year-old whose foster mother had lost patience. Different children, a variety of problems, but with one thing in common: their early experiences had landed them all in foster care.
