Community Voice: Nothing heroic about abandoning common sense in child-abuse reporting
Note: I love it when the Wex gets all worked up.
Anyone who has reasonable cause to suspect child abuse should report it. In Indiana it's required by law (though there is no evidence that this makes children safer than they are in all the states that don't force everyone to report).
But contrary to the suggestion by Rachel Tobin-Smith, (“Community Voice,” Nov. 28) there is nothing heroic about calling in a report of child abuse every time a child's grades go down or he displays a “sudden change of attitude.” Advice like that makes one wonder if Tobin-Smith ever actually raised a child.
