Norwegian Nightmare: 'Barnevernet' Preys On Children and Parents

One of the first things you notice about Norway when you visit is how beautiful it is. But there is a very dark side of Norway that most of the world knows nothing about. It's called Barnevernet, and it can be as cold and brutal as the Norwegian winter.

Barnevernet means "child welfare." It's Norway's network of local child protection service offices. But to its victims, Barnevernet means anything but protecting children.

'Norway steals children', woman interrupts Norwegian envoy's talk

New Delhi, July 9 (IANS) A woman on Tuesday loudly interrupted Norwegian ambassador to India Nils Ragnar Kamsvag's talk on India-Norway relations, demanding that Oslo return Indian children snatched away from their parents by its Child Protection Services.

As former diplomat Ashok Sajjanhar, who was in the chair, rose to introduce the Norwegian envoy and the subject of the talk, 'Can India and Norway take a leap into the New Era of Partnership?', the woman came up from the audience to stand in front of the stage holding aloft a placard, that read "Norway Steals Children".

Christian Family Takes Norway's Notorious 'Child Welfare' Agency To Court

The European Court of Human Rights has agreed to hear the case of a Romanian-Norwegian Christian family that fled Norway after their five children, including a three-month-old baby, were taken from their parents in 2015 by Barnevernet, the Norwegian child-welfare agency.

The Bodnariu case is one of eight cases at the European Court of Human Rights where Barnevernet is being investigated for taking children from parents.

3 American children removed from parents' home by Norway’s child services

An American mother now living in Norway is asking for the return of her three American-born children after they were removed from the family home in May, less than a year after moving to the Scandinavian country from Atlanta, Georgia.

American citizen Natalya Shutakova is now speaking out a month after her kids aged 7 to 11 were removed from the home about 70 miles southwest of Oslo by Norway’s controversial child protective services agency, Barnevernet, on May 20.

Norway's child protection services accused of abducting children

A controversial practice by Barnevernet, the Norwegian Child Welfare Service, keeps drawing the ire of human rights activists. The agency was accused earlier of forcibly taking away children from their parents under the pretext of mistreatment of children.

Now, a Barnevernet official has been accused of helping the abduction of two Turkish children who were on vacation in Turkey with their foster parents, according to Norwegian media outlets.

Poland accepts refugee mother who fled Norway’s child welfare services

A  mother and child became the first Norwegian refugees since the Second World War when Poland accepted their application for asylum last week.


Silje Garmo, 37, fled to Warsaw with her 23-month-old infant Eira in 2017 when she suspected that Norway’s child protection agency, known as the Barnvernet, was about to take the child away.

The case is one of a number where Norwegian authorities have removed children from their parents seemingly without any proper justification.

American Mom's Son Could Be Adopted Against Her Will After Losing Appeal in Norway CPS Court

An American mother whose baby was taken from her by Norway's controversial child protective service over minor health issues five years ago has lost her appeal and says that the groundwork is being laid for her son to be forcibly adopted.

Last month, a local county welfare board that handles child protective services cases near her home in Lyngdal, Norway ruled against United States-born mother Amy Jakobsen Bjørnevåg.

BBC Documentary Features A Scandal about Norway’s Child Welfare Service

BBC’s Our World program broadcast an episode named Norway’s Silent Scandal. The program features a scandal about Norwegian Child Welfare Services (Barnevern).
Aired on Sun 5 Aug 2018, the program shed light on the recent story of a highly respected Norwegian child psychiatrist who was convicted of downloading thousands of images of child pornography.

The psychiatrist had been used as an expert, until his arrest in April this year, by Norway’s controversial child protection system and was involved in decisions about whether children should be removed from their parents, suggested the program.
