Recent headlines decry the separation of children from their parents while waiting a court determination of their status in the United States. The nationwide firestorm of criticism from enforcing this established legal practice has even sprung from conservative supporters of the current president’s administration. While parents are detained at the border to verify their status through due process, the overall sentiment is that their children should not suffer untoward separation from them even though the family may have entered the country inappropriately.

More parents accused of child abuse than ever before
Parents in English-speaking countries are now increasingly likely to be accused of abusing their children. This mainly affects large proportions of families who are poor, deprived or socially excluded. My new research shows how this trend is being played out in England and what’s behind it.
Despite similarities between child protection systems in English-speaking countries, their statistics are not directly comparable – but common trends within countries can be identified. The latest data shows increases in child protection investigations in Australia of 42% between 2012 to 2016, Canada, 74% between 1998 and 2008, and in the US, 17% between 2007 and 2015. In England between 2008 and 2017 investigations more than doubled (a 124.3% increase).

BBC Documentary Features A Scandal about Norway’s Child Welfare Service
BBC’s Our World program broadcast an episode named Norway’s Silent Scandal. The program features a scandal about Norwegian Child Welfare Services (Barnevern).
Aired on Sun 5 Aug 2018, the program shed light on the recent story of a highly respected Norwegian child psychiatrist who was convicted of downloading thousands of images of child pornography.
The psychiatrist had been used as an expert, until his arrest in April this year, by Norway’s controversial child protection system and was involved in decisions about whether children should be removed from their parents, suggested the program.

State Fines Child & Foster Care Providers in New Ulm & Blue Earth
The Minnesota Department of Human Services has leveled fines against child and foster care providers in New Ulm and Blue Earth.
In New Ulm, the family child care of Kathleen Grausam was fined for allegedly caring for more children than allowed.
In addition, Grausam’s licensed has been placed on conditional status with DHS alleging some 30 violations over the past 3 years. Among the violations was one in 2017 when DHS says “children had access to an unlocked gun cabinet and a gun hanging on the wall.”

Texas couple accused of using adopted children as slave labor to run puppy mill

Five North Texas children were beaten and forced by their adoptive parents to care for more than 100 animals in filthy conditions at a puppy mill being run behind their home, authorities say.
Jeffery and Barbara Barrett of Greenville were arrested by Texas Department of Public Safety officers Aug. 2 and charged with continuous human trafficking, according to an agency spokesman. Both were already awaiting trial on animal-cruelty charges.

Rescued child tells foster parent about alleged active shooter training, police say
If a child tells a foster parent sensitive information, the foster parent must report it to the Children, Youth and Families Department or police, according to CYFD.
"A situation like this that's incredibly complex and there's a lot going on and it's new to everyone, so that's where communication becomes absolutely critical," said CYFD Secretary Monique Jacobson.

Krist blames Ricketts for abuse, deaths in state child welfare program
State Sen. Bob Krist blasted Gov. Pete Ricketts on Thursday as personally responsible for the sexual abuse and deaths of dozens of children in the Nebraska child welfare program.
Ricketts and his administration "have buried their heads in the sand and done nothing to fix the problems," ignoring the warnings outlined in investigations as well as calls from lawmakers to act, Krist said.

As kinship caregivers struggle, Washington’s foster care system benefits
A single mother with three of her five children still teenagers living at home, 50-year-old Denita Simmons didn’t plan on adding two babies to the mix. But her godsons needed her. The boys’ mom, a friend of the family, left the boys in Simmons’s care for longer and longer periods as she struggled with drugs. As days stretched into months, Simmons found herself the de facto mother to an infant and a toddler, even as she battled her own depression, anxiety and later breast cancer.

Appeals Court Rules in Favor of Hot Springs Family Whose Kids Were Seized in 2014
The Eighth Circuit Court of appeals has ruled in favor of a Garland County family, years after authorities seized their children from their home.
On January 12, 2015, child abuse investigators removed seven children from the home of Hal and Michelle Stanley in Hot Springs. At the time, investigators said they had reason to believe the children were being abused. The Stanleys homeschooled their kids, and gave them a substance called "Miracle Mineral Solution" (MMS). The FDA warns MMS can be hazardous.

ACS ignored background check law for years: officials
The city’s child-welfare department has for years failed to conduct required criminal background checks on prospective employees — such as the convicted murderer who is now charged with assaulting a child, state officials revealed Thursday.
“An analysis of background checks shows Administration for Children’s Services was out of compliance with the law requiring them to be run through the Justice Center from 2013 until at least 2017,” Christine Buttigieg, a spokeswoman for the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs, told The Post.

Brooklyn Park couple indicted for first-degree murder in death of foster daughter
A Brooklyn Park couple was indicted by a grand jury July 19 for first-degree murder in connection with the death of their 3-year-old foster daughter.
Sherrie Dirk, 33, and Bryce Dirk, 31, were indicted for first-degree murder while committing child abuse and second-degree murder while committing the underlying felonies of neglect, child endangerment or malicious punishment of a child, after a child in their care was found dead Nov. 6, 2017.

Marshfield man sentenced to nine months in jail for molesting foster children
A 37-year-old Marshfield man convicted of molesting his foster children received a nine-month jail sentence Tuesday in Wood County Circuit Court.
John G. Hanley also received six years of probation for two counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child. Hanley was convicted of the charges, which were reduced from two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child, on June 4.

A toddler who was in a foster home died choking on his food, the Greenville County Coroner's Office said Monday.
The Coroner's Office identified the toddler as 2 1/2-year-old Kamryn Arnold-Garrett of Greenville.

Report: State to Audit LA County Family Services After Boy’s Death
California state officials will conduct an audit of L.A. County’s Department of Children and Family Services to determine, in the aftermath of the death of a 10-year-old boy allegedly tortured by his mother and her boyfriend, whether the agency is doing enough to protect children, it was reported Thursday.
