When Tera Naset heard about a newborn baby abandoned last week in a Northwest Side alley — named Patrick Casey Doe after the first responders who helped save his life — it hit her hard.

‘Baby box’ bill could be headed to Snyder’s desk

If Gov. Rick Snyder signs the bill into law, Michigan fire departments, police departments and hospitals would be allowed to install “baby boxes” at their facilities.

Named “safe delivery of newborn law,” the bill allows for the installation of these units that would safely hold a newborn, providing warmth and oxygen, locking from the outside. It also sends a 911 call to alert authorities to the infant’s presence within 30 seconds.

Houchin co-authors bill to expand use of 'baby boxes'

INDIANAPOLIS — State senators Erin Houchin, R-Salem, and Travis Holdman, R-Markle, announced the introduction of Senate Bill 123 on Wednesday which would expand the availability of newborn safety incubators, commonly referred to as “baby boxes.”

Keeping with Indiana’s Safe Haven law, Houchin joined Holdman in co-authoring SB 123 to expand the use of baby boxes in Indiana by allowing fire departments staffed on a 24 hour basis to install baby boxes.
