A senior committee of MPs is accusing “over-enthusiastic” police officers of ruining people’s lives by pursuing false claims of child abuse.
The Home Affairs Select Committee calls for limits to be placed on police methods of "trawling" for evidence in such cases. In a report published today, the committee said that inquiries into claims dating back 30 years had created "a new genre of miscarriages of justice". In the past five years, 34 of the 43 police forces in England and Wales have investigated allegations of child abuse in children's homes or other institutions.

A SHARP increase in the use of electric shock therapy on severely mentally ill Victorians has sparked concerns the controversial psychiatric treatment is being overused.
New figures show almost 20,000 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, were carried out on 1791 patients in Victorian hospitals in the past financial year - a 10 per cent increase on procedures carried out in the previous year.
Data from Victoria's chief psychiatrist's yearly report also reveals that seven children aged 17 or younger were given a total of 46 ECT treatments, while a further 163 were administered to an undisclosed number of 18 to 19-year-olds.

In the state of South Carolina, the courts have the power to order grandparent visitation if a parent is deceased or if parents are divorced or living separately. As in all of the 50 states, the court must find that visitation would be in the best interests of the child. In addition, the court must find that visitation would not interfere with the parent-child relationship. The court is also directed to consider the nature of the relationship between the child and the grandparents prior to the filing of the request for visitation.

Whenever a child is abused or killed by a parent and it turns out the parent had prior run-ins with child welfare caseworkers, the public pounces. Some accuse state workers of being lazy or incompetent. Some want heads to roll.
It's understandable why people get so angry at the thought that a child might have been saved if only state caseworkers could have connected the dots that seem so obviously indicative of future tragedy when one has the benefit of hindsight. But anger from outsiders is often misapplied. It's important to remember that parents who harm their children are the ones who fail their children. State caseworkers aren't psychics. They also get too little credit for the children they do remove from harm's way given all the blame they get when a child is abused despite their involvement.
Note: Here we have what is called a half-truth. The first paragraph is totally true. And that creates a problem for you. That problem is that when there is a major fuck up and the media gets wind of it, workers get paranoid and steal more children for frivolous reasons just to cover their asses.
The second paragraph talks about the only true method of risk assessment. The crystal ball method. One that very few social workers are qualified to use yet one that is employed by all.

Philadelphia will consolidate its two outdated family court facilities into a single, modern building slated to break ground this summer.
Gov. Ed Rendell announced Friday that the state would provide $200 million to construct the 14-story building near City Hall.
