Child-welfare lawsuit alleges Manitoba government withholding money

A $250-million lawsuit against the Manitoba government alleges the province is holding back money from First Nations and Metis child- welfare agencies.

The lawsuit claims the government is unilaterally holding back 20 per cent of funding.

Manitoba judge urges changes to care system after Indigenous teen’s suicide death

A Manitoba judge is suggesting services for high-risk youth be reviewed following the death of an Indigenous teenage girl who hanged herself after spending most of her life in government care.

Provincial court Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta said in an inquest report released Wednesday that federal law forbids incarceration for child-welfare purposes, but there must be ways to prevent high-risk children in care from continually running away and facing grave danger.

Widespread changes demanded to prevent 'another 100 Tina Fontaines'

The death of Tina Fontaine and the acquittal of the man charged with killing her has sparked demands for widespread changes to prevent more young Indigenous people falling through society's cracks.

"It's time to take action … We all have to come together and focus on solutions and stop allowing the most marginalized people in this country to be discriminated against," Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Grand Chief Sheila North said on the steps of court Thursday, after a jury found Raymond Cormier, 56, not guilty of second-degree murder in the death of the teenager from Sagkeeng First Nation.
