A family who escaped to a happy ending

A family who escaped to a happy ending

Last week, news reached me that there was yet another distraught mother who had fled to Ireland to prevent her three children being seized for no good reason by British social workers.Although the family have been living there for four years, with the children all doing well at school, the mother had just been arrested for failing to have a valid tax disc by the Irish police, who confiscated her car and held her in a police cell for nine hours.

Where is the Line Between Adoption and Child Buying?

Where is the Line Between Adoption and Child Buying?

Adoption was once under the auspices of trained social workers who purported to have the best interests of children-in-need in their heart. Over the past several decades, however, American domestic infant and international adoption has become privatized and entrepreneurial. Only adoption from foster care remains in the hands of the state and unfortunately represents its own set of failures, abuses and funding driven corruption.

General Assembly should hasten to fix Ohio adoption law: editorial

Because of a well-meaning detour built into state law, approximately 400,000 people adopted in Ohio between Jan. 1, 1964, and Sept. 18, 1996, cannot get access to their birth certificates unless they obtain a court order. That's an expensive hurdle for an adult who would like to know about a birth parent's medical history or heritage -- or to extend an offer to meet.

Put on your rose colored glasses and join me on the journey of a foster parent.

Since I've been doing this, I have come across several blogs of people who have made the decision and take the steps to become foster parents.  Although many of them just fizzle out after a short time, a few go on and take you through the whole process.  From making the decision to regurgitating that which they learned about in foster parent training.  From getting their first stolen child to where they get all fed up and disgusted with the system and the process or totally upset with me and stop blogging altogether.   These I commonly refer to the "Foster Parent Journey" blogs.  Why?  Because becoming a foster parent is apparently some adventurous spiritual journey of self-becoming or something.

I really enjoy reading some of these blogs.  I often long for the "ignorance is bliss days" when I believed that this was all for the greater good instead of lining the pockets of the System Sucks.  Ah but learning the truth has it's drawbacks.

Still, I have yet to figure out what would possess somebody to make such a decision, but they do.  Perhaps because they're good people who were simply sold on a line of bullshit, moved by the fluff, and motivated by the constant horror stories of child abuse that the media likes to spurt out on occasion, which only covers the extremest mode.

But anyway.  I introduce you to Jennifer and Michael, who seem like good god fearing people who want to do the right thing by selling their souls to the devil, I mean joining the Child Protective Industry and becoming foster parents.

I hope and pray that someday you might come to see the truth.  I hope that  you learn empathy for the real parents instead of the hatred and criticism that fuels most of these blogs.  And I pray that you always do what's right by the kids who come into your care.

Summary of Proposals to Address Income Eligibility Requirement for Federal Foster Care Reimbursement

Summary of Proposals to Address Income Eligibility Requirement for Federal Foster Care Reimbursement

Twelve of the 14 proposals we identified would eliminate means testing altogether as a requirement for states to receive federal funding to help pay for the costs associated with supporting children in foster care. Two other proposals would link means testing to a different benchmark. Half of the proposals would mitigate a potential increase in federal costs due to the elimination of means testing by either changing the rate of federal reimbursements, capping federal funding, or both. Additionally, half would attempt to mitigate the potentially negative effects of lowering the reimbursement rate on states by, for example, allowing states to access additional funding in the event of an unanticipated increase in foster care placements. All five proposals that specify how states should use any foster care maintenance savings they incur would require states to reinvest these savings in child welfare services that benefit all children at risk of neglect or abuse.

So my current placement made a comment to a social worker about something that happened at dinner time. The situation was misinterpreted and made out to be something that it wasn't by the social worker. Well the social worker called me and accused me of breaking a serious rule. I told her respectfully that I disagreed and that she wasn't listening to me. She didn't believe me that I was telling the truth and I got upset that she wasn't listening. After an hour long phone call I thought we finally had everything figured out.

Rich pickings in foster care

Rich pickings in foster care

In January the Financial Times carried a piece about the investment potential for private companies seeking to invest in foster care. Entitled Fostering Sector Ripe For Consolidation, it begins in seductive fashion not with high finance or balance sheets but with the personal experience of carers who are clearly dedicated to the disabled child they look after. They don’t do it for the money – you couldn’t, because as they say it works out per hour at a fraction of the minimum wage. And that’s the last time children are mentioned as anything other than a commodity.

Sometimes, a story with assorted moving parts leads you to an unexpected conclusion. Over the weekend I shared a tale with a gathering of friends on how well-intended ideas can become bad law.

Note: Well isn't that the basic story of child protective services.  Some child loving fanatic goes off the deep end because, "Oh My God!!! Then all the normal people will believe him and vote for him when he comes up for re-election because he loves children.

Such a pathetic scam.

Medicaid and Children in Foster Care

The health care needs of children in foster care are vast and often compounded by their circumstances. These children face myriad challenges – from placement instability, to emotional, behavioral, and educational difficulties, to juvenile justice involvement – that threaten their health and well-being. Because they are often at the intersection of multiple public systems including behavioral health, child welfare, education, juvenile justice, and primary care, it is critical for these systems to work collaboratively to meet their health needs.

Jailed for Nonpayment of Child Support - But it's Not His Child

The feminists have ratcheted up the laws against men to such an outrageous level that paternity fraud is not just ignored, but routinely rubber stamped by the courts. Whether one agrees with the concept of child support or not, virtually everyone can agree that jailing men for child support over children who are not theirs is morally wrong. Men are routinely sent to jail for falling behind on paying child support, even though debtors' prisons in the U.S. were mostly eliminated in the mid-nineteenth century.

Use of psychotropic medication for youth in foster care

In summary the article gives us insights on the subject of the use of medication for treating behavioral and mental health tribulations in foster care children. The article further, talks about how we should use medications as a help for the relief of child and not offered as an alternative to deal with children's behavior and issues without considering or attempting non-medication options first. The article mentions the study that depicts a high psychotropic medication use amongst youth which doubled up over the decades and also further mentions foster children to be more likely on multiple medications "ranging from 13-52% than those in the general youth population 4%". Psychotropic drugs that were prescribed include those used to treat ADHD, anxiety, depression and psychosis. There is a national approach to this issue and States are stepping up to take action on the problem of over medicated children since Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoptions Act was signed into law in 2008.

Group pays drug addicts to get sterilized or receive long-term birth control, sparks criticism

On May 9, 2012, Rheana Murray, with the New York Daily News published an article on a controversial non-profit called Project Prevention (formerly known as CRACK: Children Requiring A Caring Kommunity). Project Prevention, based out of North Carolina, pays women $300 to either get tubal ligations (permanent sterilization), or other forms of long-term birth control such as IUDs, Implanon, or Depro-Provera shots. The article does well discussing both supportive and oppositional opinions revolved around the program's practices. Founder Barbara Harris holds firm to the position that Project Prevention is about preventing unwanted pregnancies and placing fewer burdens on the child welfare system. Harris has adopted four siblings, all from the same mother who was addicted to crack. The program believes that decreasing unwanted pregnancies from addict populations will aid with the economic burden on taxpayers, trim down social worker caseloads, and alleviate clients from "the burden of having children that will potentially be taken away" (projectprevention.org) The article also provides opposing viewpoints of Project Prevention, including beliefs that the program is "thinly disguised" racism, targeting vulnerable populations and women of color. Critics condemn the program further by discussing that addicts may not be in a position to make decisions of this magnitude, especially when offered money. Harris responds to criticism within the article stating that two thirds of the women Project Prevention has served are White, and that the majority of women choose long term birth control over sterilization.

Note: I agree with this.  It cuts off the supply to CPS Agents.

We need to talk about children in care

We need to talk about children in care

Recently I met two prisoners, Nick and Lee. Both are in their thirties and both are in prison because they were involved in armed robberies. In Nick’s case someone died in the course of the robbery and he is serving a 25 year sentence. Lee’s sentence is 15 months and he will be out soon. Both men have been in and out of prison for the last 20 years. As of last Friday, there were 84,500 prisoners in the UK, over 80,000 of them men. The reason I visited Nick and Lee is because they were in care as children and wanted to talk to me about what happened to them in care and how it led to them ending up in prison. The sad reality is that many thousands of prisoners who were in care as children have stories like Nick and Lee. Nick and Lee told me they want to stop other children who are in care now ending up in prison like them and following a life of crime.

Leaving me in the car, the officer jumped out to join a woman who was arguing on the sidewalk with my screaming mother.

There can be no surprise that Peel Children’s Aid Society (and in all likelihood the other 52 CASs province-wide) is keeping cases open to secure extra funding from the province. The institutional culture at the managerial level of child welfare agencies has always been more about perpetuating the interests of the society rather than the “best interests of the child” (as defined by a province-mandated “Eligibility Spectrum instrument”).

Incredible women honoured at Women’s Day ceremony

Congratulations to our beloved Velvet Martin!!!!  The greatest of the great!  The best of the best of the best!  And one of my longest and dearest friends who is finally getting the recognition that she deserves.

Incredible women honoured at Women’s Day ceremony

Every year, the Baha’i Community of St. Albert honours remarkable women from St. Albert, Morinville and Sturgeon County and their achievements at their International Women’s Day ceremony.

----

VELVET MARTIN (Unsung Heroine, Advocate for Children with Disabilities)

When Velvet’s daughter Samantha was born with severe disabilities, she was taken away by the provincial government and put into foster care. But it was that moment that Velvet began her fight for the rights of disabled children and their parents.

In 2007, the provincial government passed “Samantha’s Law,” which gave parents of a disabled child the right to raise that child themselves and have access to the government services they need. This law has gained the attention of other provinces and countries, who wish to model their own laws after it.

Sadly, Samantha died in 2006 at the age of 13 after suffering cardiac arrest. But Velvet’s fight will continue.

Oregon Foster Youth to Testify Before Senate Committee, Demand Child Welfare Reforms

In one week, a group of current and former foster youth from across the state will testify before the Senate Health and Human Services Committee to push for reforms in Oregon’s foster care system. They will be asking the State to guarantee their basic rights while in state care—rights to things like clothes that fit, proper nutrition, contact with their siblings, and their safety. While the law already protects these rights in theory, gaps in policies and protocols still keep many foster youth from ever knowing their rights in care and, worse, leave them without safe means to report violations.
