Regards to the article, Couple's fight to see grandchildren, my sincere regrets to the grandparents who have shared their story. I am located in Alberta, Canada and have seen the trials of mismanagement of children first hand. Children, who are supposed to be placed first in decision-making, but instead are often forgotten in efforts to make over-worked and ill-equipped caseworkers' positions easier by taking a less complex path. Grandparents are a largely misplaced group of individuals who are not considered for their value, love and devotion to the children who are kin of their heart. Undoubtedly, it would be difficult to argue the love a grandparent holds for their children's child and the importance of retaining a full relationship wherever feasible.
“We have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of the children and it would be wholly inappropriate to discuss further what are extremely personal and confidential matters relating to children and their family.” Time and again, misuse of trust and power to eliminate accountability on behalf of Government. The freedom of privacy and protection laws are in place to serve the children and families. Who best to represent children, but those who have an invested interest in the child: LOVE! Therefore, when a family opts to waive its FOIP and openly discuss issues which may better determine course of action, this need be respected for the sake of the children! At least, allow an independent Child Advocate who reports to the Public body, instead of the Minister alone, to speak on behalf of children!
Better yet, allow the CHILDREN to speak for themselves.
