False accusations of child abuse hurt many

False accusations of child abuse hurt many

False allegations of abuse may be made by either parent. They are more common coming from the custodial parent, trying any method they can to prevent the children’s other parent from having any contact or visitation with them. This is despicable. It is also particularly effective because of the difficulty of proving innocence of a crime that didn’t happen. This is most effective because the accuser will claim this happened weeks or months earlier because there is no evidence.

Why is the Arizona “Family Advocate” Threatening People Asking About Children in State Custody?

The statement “Ms. Hoffman is the only person at the legislature who handles CPS constituent issues directly and with the Attorney General’s Office” apparently means that parents who have questions about why the state seizes custody of their children can only be answered by Maria Hoffman, an unelected employee under contract with the Arizona legislature. Those elected to represent the parents and families, have to defer all questions regarding Department of Child Safety (DCS – formerly CPS) taking children away from families to her.

How the 2014 Elections Might Impact Federal Child Welfare Policy

Given the non-representative electorate that turned out to vote on November 4, we can debate whether the 2014 midterms were a “wave” election or not, but unquestionably they resulted in big victories for the Republican Party in Congress. When the last few races are called, Republicans will likely have added over a dozen seats to their majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, bringing their advantage to over 60 seats in that body. Even more importantly, Republicans dominated the contested U.S. Senate races and will take control of that chamber in January.

Human services pose early test for Charlie Baker administration

Human services pose early test for Charlie Baker administration

GOVERNOR-ELECT Charlie Baker knows from experience that the state’s human services system — child protection, mental illness, welfare, and juvenile justice — will pose the stiffest challenge for his new administration at the highest stakes. Baker served as secretary of health and human services from 1992 to 1994, a time when scores of people died under the care or control of state human service agencies — 42 suicides in the state mental health system in 1994 alone, according to a Globe article from that period. Human services advocates pointed — as they often do — to insufficient budgets. State officials pointed — as they often do— to better record-keeping that accounted for more suicides.

Adoptions collapse after judge denounces 'sloppy’ social workers

Scarcely a day goes by now without more public evidence of disquiet at how lamentably our “child protection” system has gone off the rails. On Tuesday, for the second time, parents convinced that their children had been wrongly removed from them went to Brussels to appear before a sympathetic committee of the European Parliament. This time they were protesting at the ruthless pressures brought on them by social workers for daring to put their case to the MEPs. It prompted one committee member, Tatyana Zdanoka, to say: “In my experience the UK is unique in Europe for the secrecy of its family courts and for the threats and bullying by authorities of parents who want to speak out about their treatment.”

Foster care in need of better inter-agency communication

Graham resident Erin Harvey said recently that, at least as the system functions now, she's done fostering children. She would love to do it again, but after a heartbreaking experience in 2010 fostering a teenage girl that she hoped to make a permanent member of her family, she's lost faith in any kind of support offered through agencies charged with placing foster children in homes and assisting foster families.

U.S. Seeks to Ease Influx of Central American Child Migrants

Vice President Joe Biden announced on Friday that Washington will allow some children in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to apply for refugee status from their home countries, in a bid to stem an exodus of undocumented migrants to the U.S. border through Mexico. The program only applies to children whose parents are legal residents of the United States. But Biden said it should provide an alternative for children making the "harrowing" journey alone from Central America in order to join their parents. In a speech, Biden reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Central America, but made no promises of additional financial assistance to help curb the influx of migrants, as regional leaders have urged.

Mothers Talk Differently to Daughters than Sons: Study

Most mothers would tell you they speak to all their children the same way. A new study suggests they might be deceived. In a study published yesterday in The British Journal of Developmental Psychology, authors Ana Aznar and Harriet Tenenbaum found that mothers are more likely to use emotional words and emotional content when speaking with their 4-year-old daughters than with their 4-year-old sons.

Maine providers wonder if ouster of 2 top managers signals change in direction for DHHS

The departure of two high-level managers in the Maine Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday left some social services providers surprised and concerned about the fate of vulnerable children and Mainers struggling with addiction.

Note: I left the following comment on this article...

It is a change in direction. LePage thinks the state should be snatching more kids from their homes and make it harder for the parents to get them back. He stated this back in 2012.
"LePage told a television station Wednesday that he supports the death penalty "for those that kill babies" and feels DHHS has "gone from one extreme to another" when it decides whether to remove a child from a home in which abuse is suspected.
The department has been criticized in the past for being too quick to remove a child, LePage said, but now, "sometimes we're putting them back too quickly and sometimes we're not taking them out fast enough."
http://www.centralmaine.com/20...
That's why he's cutting treatment programs that could help the families. Not to mention the fact that such would bring in more federal dollars and be an economic boost to lawyers, shrinks, foster care agencies, and anybody else who profits off of abused kids.
