Majority of families with disabled children face prejudice

Study shows parents of disabled children find support services poor and believe their roles as carers are not valued by society

As a Canadian, I am able to offer perspective supportive of tragic events which occur and sadly, I have learned from near and far, these deficits transcend boundaries Nationwide.

Particularly, my Advocacy is aimed at the prevention of families of Children with Disabilities from being grouped amongst individuals who may require protection. No clear division exists in many instances and this has created a large chasm of unnecessary separation of families.

In effort to access Government services and funding for loved ones with medical and developmental needs, natural, loving families have been faced with unconscionable 'choice' which includes surrendering guardianship and out of home foster placement in order to achieve help.

The victimization that has arisen when well-meaning entities wield power ineffectively and without adequate contemplation of the results that follow interference has been atrocious. Fortunately, I was able to effect an Amendment in Legislation in the Province of Alberta.

Family Support for Children with Disabilities Act (FSCD) of Alberta, Canada

Section 2-3, Manual Amendments: Policy and Procedures in Family Centred Supports and Services, Effective December 2006.

The Family Support for Children with Disabilities Program to have separate legislation from that of child protection services.

I encourage others to take action on this particular stance to preserve families of children with disabilities intact. Family-centred Care must be prioritized and solidified by review of current Policy which is often archaic and counter-productive in its vision towards individuals with disability. If we are able to salvage the lives and core values of families who are already facing tremendous strain with the diagnosis of developmental disability - and/or medical issues - we offer this model to others whole-heartedly.

In addition, I wish to thank the author and paper for bringing forward a topic that has obvious concern as it has also reached us in Canada. This, regards to raising awareness of the tribulations that families of special children are subject to.

On the 22nd of October 2008, a CBC journalist, Kim Trynacity, aired a segment on the evening news regards to "S.M." entitled, "A Terrible CHOICE". (Publication ban does not allow the name of the individual to be cited.) Upon discussion with Minister Tarchuck on the case of "S.M." The Minister refused to comment, but did respond to the reporter: "Changes have been made to see that situation does not happen again".

Until faced with the challenges which arise when a parent is suddenly presented with the birth of a child with exceptional needs, awareness of deficits in our Government system are not fathomed and yet when awareness is presented, one finds this is a Canada-wide/US (National) dilemma. Advocate, Anne Larcade, has been publicly subject of similar battle in the Province of Ontario on behalf of children with developmental differences, such as Autism:

  2. The two cases,PAIN, have dealt with recently, have ended up in trauma, for both single Moms.
Case 1, Mother had a big 14 year old autistic, Son, he started, to become violent, and broke his Mothers nose, and because he had Younger Siblings, and he started to attack them,Mom, very reluctantly, placed him into Voluntary Care, on a section 20 order, the next thing, Social Services, did was to instigate Child Protection Proceedings. with reference to her two remaining Children.
With a lot of perseverance, and advice from PAIN, she has managed to Keep her other Children, but now has been labeled, A Child Abuser.
We await A CRB, enhanced disclosure, and if the allegation,is on file, i will be dealing with the former, within Parliament.
All the help, this poor Women, got with reference to her Sons, disability, was the possibility, of loosing her other Children.
