Protecting kids would be main CPS goal

State lawmakers are moving to radically redefine the role of Child Protective Services, making it focus more exclusively on protecting children from criminal abuse or neglect.

The House Health and Human Services Committee voted 6-3 on Wednesday to make protection of children the sole primary purpose of CPS. The agency would no longer also focus on keeping youngsters with their families when possible.
