Public should know why abused toddler was returned to parents

The state Department of Human Resources continues to withhold information on the fate of little Adrianna Swain; she was critically beaten last month after a Cobb County juvenile judge returned the toddler to her parents over the objections of a court-appointed advocate and a citizen’s review panel.

The state contends that it can’t share details about Adrianna because of confidentiality laws. But the laws don’t protect Adrianna; they protect the adults who bungled this case and put the child into a dangerous home. It’s time to stop shielding the adults in child welfare under the pretense of safeguarding the children.
