Orphans relocated on trains

Orphans relocated on trains

Q. Have you heard of the Orphan Train? I was told orphans once were put on trains. The trains then stopped at various towns along their routes, and farmers would adopt the orphans to work on their land. Is this true? If so, when and how long did it last?

  1. Altho I wasn't born yet when the orphan trains happened, I remember my parents talking about it. They weren't all orphans. Many people couldn't afford to raise their kids and thought they were giving their kids a better chance at life. It worked for some and not for others.
My guess is it was a failure because they discontinued it.
Now that I'm older and wiser, I can see that this was an inhumane ploy by our "wonderful" government. These naive parents trusted our government. So sad!
