Judge briefly jails child welfare workers, volunteers in juvenile case

Meurer says she wanted them to know what detention is like before recommending it for 14-year-old girl.

  1. aND THEY WILL whine and probably sue to high heaven. We should all contact this Judge and ask her to get with other Judges across the States, and share some ideas. At least she did something different. Just like those workers didnt know they didnt have to do go to jail, many parents dont know the laws when workers come to their homes. You dont have to answer the door or let them in. Great post, thanks LK

I know this judge very well. I have worked in her Courtroom for some 4 years. What she did is wrong. She asked for these workers opinion and then jailed them for it. Having been there that day, it was NOT voluntary. I watched as the Bailiff came running out of Court and began shouting at the sheriff deputies to "lock them up, they are all detained." Doesn't sound voluntary to me, didn't then either. Anyway, this judge has a habit of yelling and screaming and brow beating her workers, no surprise that her Court has one of the highest turnover rates in the entire county. Also, how can a judge order someone detained for giving you their opinion when you asked for it.

What actually happened was that this child had assaulted her mother and the mom did not want the child back home. What other options did they have other than to detain? Release the child to the streets? Also, this judge complained that detention should not be an option for family problems. I know from first hand experience she had her own son jailed when she caught him abusing prescription pain killers. She actually brought him down to detention and told the workers there to have him detained. Sounds a little hypocritical to yell at someone for doing exactly what you did.
