Family court doors could open

In wake of child protection scandal, bill would bring transparency to some court procedures

FRANKFORT n After disciplinary measures were taken against six Hardin County social workers accused of wrongdoing last year, now comes legislative action to crack open closed-door juvenile court proceedings in an effort to improve the child protection system.

House Bill 421, filed Thursday, is aimed at launching a program in up to seven judicial jurisdictions to study the feasibility of opening some juvenile cases to the public. Specifically, the bill provides for a four-year study of public access to abuse, neglect, dependency and termination of parental rights cases.
