Senator Migden on foster care reform

Too bad she's missing the half of it.

SB 39 seeks to protect the children who come into contact with Child Protective Services and the foster care system from death due to abuse and neglect; such deaths currently number about 100 per year. SB 39 would provide greater protection and prevention strategies for these children by making the documents compiled during abuse investigations, as well as those created after a death, available for analysis and education by stakeholders who want to improve the way children are protected under these systems.

SB 348 seeks to close the equity gap between youth within the foster care system and youth supported by their families. More specifically, SB 348 extends the age of emancipation of foster youth from age 18 to the age of 2l and sets the goal of establishing a Transitional Guardianship Program to help foster youth become more self-sufficient as they transition into adulthood.
