More Kids on Government Radar
There has been a dramatic rise in the number of children in Newfoundland and Labrador whose lives require some degree of intervention by government. As well, more children are in the care of the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services. In April 2010 - just a little over a year ago - there were 7,758 children in their system and 644 in their care.
As of February 28th those numbers were up by 11 per cent and 15 per cent respectively. The minister, Charlene Johnson, says there were 8,592 children receiving services as of February 28th with 739 in their care.
