Lawsuit urges states to stop taking foster kids' SSI benefits
A lawsuit filed against the State of Maryland claims that a county social services department illegally took a foster child's Social Security survivor benefits to reimburse itself for the costs of his foster care. At the same time, two children's advocacy groups have released a report sharply criticizing the common practice of states taking foster kids' Supplemental Security Income (SSI), SSDI and other Social Security benefits, and urges Congress to make that practice illegal.
