Unusual case evolves around welfare, abuse of siblings
Because of the nature of the abuse documented in this story, The Denver Post is using only the first names of the main characters.
The adoptive parents, Mike and Joanna, agreed to allow their story to be told on the condition that their children not be identified.
By necessity, that meant keeping secret other details, such as the neighborhood where they live or schools they attend. The story is told through interviews with the family, officials and a juror, and through court documents and proceedings.
