Progress Seen but Struggles Still Evident Within Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare
The child welfare system in Milwaukee has experienced its share of problems and changes over the years. In the early 90s, a national children’s advocacy group sued the county over concern that kids in the foster care system were being abused and neglected. The lawsuit prompted the state to take over the program. But the same group, Children’s Rights, later sued the state for not addressing the same problems. Now, nearly eight years after the parties agreed on terms to settle the case, WUWM’s LaToya Dennis examines the statistics and talks with those charged with keeping kids safe.
