Educator Taking Flack For Spanking Views

A pastor at a Cape Cod church who's been hired to act as an assistant principal at a Mattapoisett middle school is being scrutinized after he said spanking a child is an acceptable act of discipline.

I personally do not agree with spanking or corporal punishment because from my own experience I can remember being punished even froma very young age but cannot remember what I did wrong to deserve it.

There is evidence to suggest however that children who are disiplined have better outcomes in life. There is the work of Arak Sigman which suggests that children who were taught dicipline are more critical thinkers because they have learned that there are consequences to every action.

I have learned in psychology class that in order for it to be effective that it must be immediate and must done with the intention of imposing dicipline to teach children limits rather than inflicting pain and causing harm. I firmly believe that positivly reinforcing good behavior is far more effective. I don't believe it is wrong or constitutes abuse as the human bodies way of stopping us doing something is to inflict pain. A gentle slap on the hand is better than a third degree burn.

This IS disturbing! Growing up in the south we got whoopin's! My children were spanked but not for just anything, it had to be really bad. I never made a "good" spanker. Katie Mae would always run from me screaming and I would chase her. Soon she and I would be laughing and rolling around too tuckered out for whatever it was. I never let anybody touch my kids though! I will never forget a teacher making me stand in the front of the class for a paddling. I glanced a certain direction during a test and was accused of cheating. Must have been the third or 4th grade. I'm raising my grand daughter who will be 12 this month. She has never been spanked and she has never done anything that I believe would even warrant such a thing. We talk and we listen. She is a really good girl NO ONE TOUCHES MY CHILDREN I have a list at my blog of states who allow cp in public schools but you can easily find them through Google. Georgia is one of those States and make sure you read the CPS state rules on School CP too. They do not allow Foster Parents to do it but a grown man or woman with an onlooker can at school. Will they notify the parents? I say no to CP!
